The siamang is the largest of the gibbons. Its coat is completely black and it is totally arboreal. It is found in the tropical jungles of the Malay peninsula and the island of Sumatra, where it moves about by swinging from branch to branch using its long arms, a method of locomotion known as brachiation. It sometimes walks upright on the ground or on tree trunks.

Its diet consists mainly of leaves, tender shoots and different kinds of fruit. Its social organisation is based on the family unit, normally consisting of small groups with 4-5 members.

The species is characterised by a highly developed air sac in its throat, which functions as a resonating chamber and allows it to produce a booming call that can be heard at a distance of up to 4 km.
